Phoenix?Police Sergeant?Tommy Thompson?said the shooting erupted after a morning meeting involving a legal dispute, and police were looking for a 70-year-old suspected gunman described as "armed and dangerous."

"He was involved in some type of litigation meeting," Thompson told a news conference of the suspect, giving his name as?Arthur Douglas Harmon. "After that meeting, he got into an altercation with some of the individuals and actually shot two of those individuals."

Police said a third person, described as a witness who followed the gunman as he fled the scene, was also shot.

The shooting comes as the?United States?is on edge about gun violence after a gunman shot and killed 20 children and six adults at a?Connecticut?school in December, sparking a heated national debate over gun control.

It also coincided with the start of U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee hearings in Washington on possible gun control measures.

Police in?Phoenix?said that?Steve Singer, 48, was killed and another man was in critical condition. A 32-year-old woman was being treated for a non-life threatening injury.

Two other people were taken to hospital for "stress related symptoms," although there were no immediate details of their condition.

Prominent litigator?

Law firm?Osborn Maledon?confirmed that litigator Mark Hummels - who is president of the?Federal Bar Association's?Phoenix?chapter - had been shot during a mediation meeting at the office building.

"Our partner,?Mark Hummels, was representing a client in a mediation today when he was shot. We understand that other people also were injured," the firm said in a statement.

Hummels' practice focuses on business disputes, real estate litigation and legal malpractice defense, according to the firm's website.

Police later surrounded a house that local television news reported belonged to Harmon. He was not believed to be at the home, and remains at large.

Frank?Kirby, a financial planner who works in an office near the scene of the shooting, told Reuters he was outside his building immediately after the incident and heard the gunman fire at someone in a white car.

That person then sped away in reverse as he sought to escape the gunfire,?Kirby?said, adding he was close enough to smell the gunpowder in the air.

Tornadoes rip central, southeast U.S., at least two dead

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Tornadoes ripped through four states on Tuesday night and Wednesday, killing at least two people, as an Arctic cold front clashed with warm air to produce severe weather over a wide swath of the nation.

Tornadoes were reported in Mississippi, Georgia, Indiana and Tennessee, an unusual development in January when the focus is more likely to be on snow and ice.

The National Weather Service said twisters touched down in Sardis, Mississippi, and heavily damaged homes in Solsberry, Indiana, wiping out power in the surrounding areas. Three twisters were confirmed in Tennessee and a possible tornado hit southeastern Arkansas.

In Georgia, a man was killed when a tornado hit his mobile home late Wednesday morning, said Bartow County administrator Pete Olson.

In north Nashville, a man died when a tree fell on his garage apartment, according to Jeremy Heidt, spokesman for the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency.

"We have trees down all over the place," said Brittney Coleman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Nashville.

The same storm system is moving eastward, bringing a risk of severe weather from the upper Ohio Valley south to the central Gulf Coast and east to the Mid-Atlantic and southeast coast, according to the National Weather Service. Damaging winds of up to 70 miles per hour (113 km/h), hail and more tornadoes are possible.

Behind the severe weather, the Arctic front brought snowfall to the central Plains, where many schools were closed and driving was hazardous across eastern Nebraska.

Wisconsin was getting snow Wednesday afternoon, with up to 6 inches in Madison, according to Accuweather.com. Temperatures were expected to plunge below freezing in Chicago, after hitting a record on Tuesday of 63 degrees (about 17 degrees Celsius).

In Tennessee, which declared a state of emergency, buildings and homes were damaged by the storm that cut a 4.6 mile-long path that was 150 yards wide through the center of Mt. Juliet, about 20 miles east of Nashville.

In Indiana, about 11,900 customers in center of the state were without electricity because of the storm, utilities said.

Piles of debris and downed power lines blocked roadways in Indiana, including State Road 45 in southwestern Monroe County and State Road 43, which was closed from Solsberry to Hendricksville.

In north Georgia, a portion of Interstate 75 was closed in both directions near exit 306 due to storm damage, said Jill Goldberg, spokeswoman for the state's department of transportation.

Power outages and damaged homes were reported in at least 10 counties in Mississippi, mostly in the northern part of the state.

In Arkansas, there were numerous reports of roof damage, downed trees and power lines, and destroyed barns. A tornado may have hit Monticello, in the southeastern part of the state, authorities said.

At the University of Arkansas at Monticello, a horse barn was blown off its foundation across a parking area, damaging livestock trailers, according to the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management. Several fires were started from lightning strikes.

The storms Wednesday will drive down the morning's warmer temperatures with chillier air following in their wake, said meteorologist Dan Depodwin on Accuweather.com.

Prayer, PLDC, House Politics and More Legislative News | Hawaii ...

Prayer Back in Style at Hawaii Senate

Prayer was banned from official proceedings in the State Senate two years ago after the Hawaii Citizens for the Separation of State and Church and the American Civil Liberties Union threatened to sue the legislature.

For decades, Hawaii Senators took turns offering prayers, poems, songs or thoughts for the day at the beginning of each floor session, or they invited guests to do the same in their place, and there was never an issue.

However, in January 2011, the Hawaii State Senate ended its practice because of the legal threats.

The House Speaker, who was faced with the same threat, continued on with daily prayer -- and was never was sued.

Now under new leadership of Senate President Donna Mercado Kim, the Senate will once again allow prayer before the floor session opens.

The first prayer will be offered on Thursday and participation by Senators will continue to be optional.

?

Tide Turns for?Public Land Development Corporation

The creation of the Public Land Development Corporation or the PLDC in 2011 has been one of the most controversial issues among Hawaii activists.

The PLDC, which operates under the Department of Land and Natural Resources, is charged with the task of developing state land to generate revenue and the board was given the ability to fast track development with minimal public input.

Many concerned environmental groups and activists have called on the legislature and the governor to dissolve the organization. In his opening day remarks, Senate Minority Leader Sam Slom also called for PLDC?s repeal.

But there has been strong resistance from Gov. Neil Abercrombie and some legislative leaders.

However, with the protesters getting louder and more effective, key legislators who once supported the PLDC will work to nix the agency.

Legislators say it is likely that by the end of the 2013 session, the controversial Public Land Development Corporation will be just a memory.

?

House GOP Leaderships' Surprising Response?

Republicans in the Hawaii State House have annually pledged to oppose all new tax increases.?But this year under newly elected Rep. Aaron Ling Johnason, the House?s seven Republicans have softened that position.

In response to a Hawaii Reporter inquiry, Johanson said the House Republicans would not take a unified stance against all new tax hikes.

Instead he said the House GOP will thoughtfully consider the real impact that any tax burden would place on low-income residents, working families and small businesses.

House Republicans helped put House Speaker Joe Souki in power this year, and have been assigned three vice chairmanships in exchange. They also supported the considerably more liberal faction of the House Democrats over the more fiscally conservative Democrats who were previously in power.

Despite the GOP's low numbers (7 of 51 House seats), their decision to support or oppose tax increases could make a difference for the taxpayers.

Microsoft retools Office for touch screen, Web use

(AP) ? Microsoft's retooled version of its Office software is hitting the market as the company tries to extend one of its key franchises beyond personal computers.

Tuesday's debut comes six months after Microsoft previewed the new-look Office, which includes popular word processing, spreadsheets and email programs.

The revamped Office boasts touch controls, just like the redesigned version of the Windows operating system that Microsoft Corp. released three months ago. The company, which is based in Redmond, Wash., is trying to ensure that its products retain their appeal at a time when people increasingly rely on smartphones and tablet computers instead of PCs.

Yet Microsoft still isn't trying to get Office on the largest number of devices possible. Office 2013 doesn't include an option that works on Apple Inc.'s iPhone and iPad or smartphones and tablets running the Android software made by Google Inc. That leaves out the majority of smartphones and tablets sold in the past two years.

The company believes Office 2013 is currently best suited for Windows devices, said Chris Schneider, Microsoft's senior public relations manager for Office. Microsoft is trying to become a bigger player in the mobile market with its own operating system for smartphones and tablets.

Office 2013 is the first overhaul of the software suite in three years.

The bundle of programs has become a staple on desktop and laptop computers, providing a rich vein of revenue for Microsoft.

The company has reaped most of its Office sales from licenses allowing buyers to install the suite of programs on individual machines, a very lucrative strategy. The Microsoft division anchored by Office generates about $24 billion in annual sales, accounting for nearly one-third of Microsoft's total revenue.

Revenue in the Office division fell from the previous year during the three months ending in December, partly because many prospective buyers have been awaiting the latest version.

In one of the biggest changes, Microsoft has tailored Office 2013 so it can be peddled primarily as a program that's used over Internet connections. All information is automatically stored in Microsoft's data centers, allowing for access to the same material on multiple devices. The content also can be stored on the hard drives of devices.

Microsoft is offering Office 2013 in a $100 annual subscription package, called 365 Home Premium, which includes online access on up to five Windows devices or Mac computers. The fee also provides 20 additional gigabytes of storage on Microsoft's SkyDrive to supplement the 7 gigabytes that the company gives away to accountholders for free. Subscribers also will get 60 minutes of free international calls on Microsoft's Skype service for Internet phone calls and video chats.

College students and teachers will be able to buy Office 2013's online product for $80 for four years, which works out to about $1.67 per month.

The online push reflects Microsoft's recognition that people want access to documents and email on whatever Internet-connected device they might have, wherever they may be, whether it's at work, home or a store while running errands.

"The technology needs to be able to move with you," Schneider said.

It's the first time that Microsoft has tried to persuade consumers that a recurring online subscription is the best way to buy and use Office. Microsoft had previously sold online Office subscriptions primarily to small businesses.

Office will still be sold under a one-time licensing fee that allows the software to be installed on a single machine. The fees start at $140.

Microsoft's decision to reshape Office into an online service makes sense, although it may take customers a while to sign up for the subscriptions, said Edward Jones analyst Josh Olson. He suspects major companies that rely on Office probably will be among the last users to make the switch.

"This is a good innovation, but the uptake may be slow to begin because it is so different," Olson said.

Brace Yourself for the Post-PC Threat Era

It was inevitable. As computing has evolved, so has its nemesis: malware. "2012 is truly the year we entered the post-PC era as cybercriminals moved to embrace Android, social media platforms, and even Macs with their attacks," Trend Micro declared in its annual Security Roundup last week. A characteristic of the post-PC threat landscape is the accelerated growth of malware.

eftinasrin: French Day: Faux traveling, a whole new Staycation ...

I grew up the daughter of an airline family.? At various points in my life my mother, father, grandfather, uncle, older sister, two aunts and two uncles all worked for an airline in one way or the other-ticket counter, manager, pilot, management, flight attendant, reservations, you name it.? In the airline industry, you put up with a lot of stress in exchange for travel benefits.? So, we traveled.? A lot. I grew up with the expectation that every couple of months you take a long weekend or longer to Arizona, or Hawaii, or Disneyland.? Sometimes even on more adventurous vacations out of the country.? After graduating high school I was terrified of the prospect of losing that lifestyle so I went to work for the airlines myself.? But after a couple of years I realized, as previously mentioned, those benefits come at the price of lots of stress.? And, starting out, I made so little money I rarely could afford to go anywhere anyway, even with the benefits.? Skip forward, for this and many other reasons, I decided to finish the degree I had been slowly, spottily working on.? I figured I could get a degree and be able to afford to travel full fare anyway.? Voila, right?

Ha.? Years and years later and I still have the expectation and itch to go somewhere every couple of months.? I get very antsy if I don?t have some change of scenery.? I think that is also why I have moved so much, or constantly rearrange the furniture.? But it doesn?t work out that often, beyond visiting relatives by car-the most 5 hours away.? If we go anywhere that is truly a vacation, it?s every couple of years, and with my parents who we love to travel with, but makes me still feel like a child sometimes.? It requires carefully saving up money and miles. I know some people rarely go anywhere at all, and maybe this sounds snobbish, but it really is an uncontrollable itch.? Needless to say we, or more importantly, I do not scratch the itch as much as I feel I need to, whether the itch is rational or not.

As a parent, I look back on the experiences traveling I had as a child.? How it shaped me.? My travels stirred compassion, awe, inspiration, tolerance and awareness.? I wouldn?t be the person I am today without witnessing poverty in the streets of Hong Kong; the contrast of overcrowded industrial cities vs. the vastness of the desert or other quiet parts of the world; the colors of the Great Barrier Reef, the rich life hidden below the surface of the water, invisible to the rest of the world. The colors of the world.

I want that sense of inspiration and understanding for my children too, even if we can?t physically go far.? Not too long ago I read ?Paris in Love? by Eloisa James and was telling my children about Paris.? They were particularly impressed when I told them about all the yummy food and the typical meals there.? I had them at ?In the summer, sometimes French children eat ice cream for breakfast,? something I had read on the internet but had no idea if it was really true.? The response was ?Let?s go!?? We wished.? To let them down gently I said ?Let?s pretend to go.?? And so French Day was born.

The question was, how do you extract the essence of a far away place and infuse it into your home, a day in your very different life?? It?s hard to actually pretend like you are standing in front of the Eiffel Tower. ? We could attempt to build a model of the Eiffel Tower.? We could check out books at the library and study the country, learn the facts.? But that all feels so schoolish, and that takes the fun out of it.? This is no homeschooling, this is vacation, a kind of staycation.

We were just going to have to be French, I thought.? And what are the French about?? Fashion and food?? Well, I had little chance of luring the boys into the fashion world, but my boys are like men: the way to their hearts is through their stomach.

We would eat.? And through eating, we would experience.? So, I donned my fanciest scarf and skinny pants, a nod to the fashion part, and headed out the door one recent morning to Sweet Life Patisserie.? If the name has French in it, good enough for us.

If the French indulge in moderation, we would too.? We all chose one item, plus one extra, and shared.? A croissant, a cherry chocolate scone, a French cinnamon breakfast muffin, and the very French pain au chocolate.? The boys had hot chocolate and I had a cafe au lait.

Breakfast

Breakfast

We took our time, really savoring each delicious bite, enjoying the rare treat.? We discussed our opinions on which was the best.

Nothing compares to flakey pastries.

Nothing compares to flaky pastries.

We went about our day, going to the library and even checking out some books on France to look at.? We cut these out and used them as a backdrop on our dining room table.

Paper City Paris

Paper City Paris

I made a four course lunch of a simple salad, beef stewed in red wine with a baguette, French cheese (mimolette-like a hard sharp cheddar -nothing stinky!) pears, a French red wine (it wasn?t very good so I won?t bother posting the name) and custard eclairs we took home from Sweet Life.? The paper city also provided some discussion prompts over our long, lingering lunch.? We ate for two hours.? But mimicking the French, we ate so slowly and moderately that after lunch I was pleasantly full, instead of stuffed.? It was nice.

We spent the afternoon looking at books and talking about France.? We looked at pictures of the art, read about the architecture, learned about it?s geography and it?s people.? We practiced speaking French with a CD from the library.? I told them stories my French teacher in college told me.? But really, for us it was all about the French art of eating.? The breaks between meals was intermission, with eager anticipation of what was next on the menu.

Supper was simple, simple for the French anyway: roast beef and crudite with French onion dip, a sausage and bean cassoulet with the last of the baguette, and more cheese, fruit and wine.? We took our time and I asked the boys what their favorite part of the day was.? Breakfast at Sweet Life was the star, and I admit for my sweet tooth as well.? I asked if they had learned anything about France.? They came up with nothing.? Which is ok, because for me I learned that this staycation was more than a vacation, more than experiencing a different culture, more than it?s food,? more than it?s language.? For me, the unexpected learning experience was that I learned a different way to be with my children.? I learned to give into indulgences with them, and to be fully present with them.? Our daily operating status, like many families I believe, is the kids are off playing or reading or whatever, while I am cleaning, cooking, or whatever I need to do to maintain our home, the chickens, the garden, the schedule.? As they grow older, I spend less bonding time with them.? French Day, our mini vacation, was not just a vacation into a different world, it was a vacation from how we operate on a daily basis.? We sat together at the table, talking for long periods of time.? We spent time looking at books and delving into our subject.? For a whole day.

Even if we were actually on vacation, if we truly were in France, my methodical and systematic mind would be focused on organizing our sightseeing, that days plan and the next.? I would be focused on the different awareness I adopt when traveling, in retrospect a rather cranky one, that focuses on ensuring I don?t lose my children in a foreign place and keeping them from making too much noise in a hotel room.

What I learned was how to be leisurely with my children.? Which is funny, because part of being French is leisure.

I also learned that they like expensive cheese.

Video: Car bursts through wave of sea foam, nearly hits police

In this video filmed in Australia?s Sunshine Coast, an amateur filmmaker records a clip of sea foam that has risen up to cover a nearby road. Two friends are heard off-camera discussing a public transportation bus that is slowly making its way through the wall of foam while two traffic cops observe the situation.

About 10 seconds into the video, one of the observers says, ?Oh, look, there?s a wave.?

Except, it?s not. What appeared to be a tide of sea foam is actually a previously unseen car plowing through the water. It suddenly bursts through the foam and nearly collides with the two police officers.

There is some mild adult language near the end of the clip, but thankfully no one is hurt in the unusual and entertaining video.

Analysis: Companies offset weak sales growth with fat margins

(Reuters) - After four years of belt-tightening, American companies are good at squeezing more profit out of every dollar of sales - a skill that chief executives regard as critical in the face of an uncertain economy.

While the headline-making cuts of the last recession - when companies shed tens of thousands of workers as they scrambled to lower costs - have mostly passed, they have kept their focus on finding lots of small steps to improve earnings.

For some companies, the changes are relatively simple. McDonald's Corp was able to beat Wall Street's profit forecasts by keeping its locations open on Christmas and rolling out the cult favorite McRib sandwich in December.

For others, pumping up the results involves a more complicated dance, keeping costs down while still spending enough on research and development to ensure they have a steady stream of new products to rely on.

Toothpaste and detergent maker Procter & Gamble Co reported a 12 percent rise in fourth quarter earnings on 2 percent sales growth, reflecting both cost controls - it cut more than 5,000 jobs last year - and new products, said Chief Executive Bob McDonald.

"You've got to do both at the same time. You have to do innovation and productivity at the same time," McDonald said in an interview.

Conglomerate Honeywell International Inc , which reported a 6 percent rise in profit on 1 percent sales growth, faced a similar challenge.

"We want to be able to do everything right and fast," said CEO David Cote. "In a slow-growth global economy, this becomes especially important for margin rate growth."

More broadly, companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 index <.spx> that have reported quarterly results so far this earnings season have averaged a 7.7 percent rise in profit on 5.2 percent revenue growth.

Management consultants say that is due, in part, to a renewed focus on spending to grow.

"I'm seeing organizations being very, very disciplined. They are willing to invest, but they are only willing to invest where they see tangible returns," said David Axson, a managing director in Accenture's finance and enterprise performance consulting group who works with Fortune 100-level CFOs. "Profit opportunities are very transitory at the moment.

LITTLE FAT TO TRIM

Corporate America has become far more selective in its cutting, largely because it has already become so lean.

"They have done a phenomenal job of becoming more efficient," said JJ Kinahan, chief derivatives strategist at TD Ameritrade in Omaha. "There's not a company now that can actually survive with any fat on the bones."

Honeywell's focus on margin improvement is constant and extends across most of the company - from tweaking manufacturing processes to make products with less waste, to focusing on newer products that face less competition and can command higher prices, said Chief Financial Officer Dave Anderson.

"It's not just squeezing," Anderson said in a telephone interview. "Anybody can do that on a short-term basis, but you can't sustain it."

Companies have continued to find fat to trim, though.

Lockheed Martin Corp , the Pentagon's biggest supplier, is facing huge defense spending cutbacks that could trim sales as much as 6 percent this year. But still, it forecast profits would rise as much as 9 percent in 2013, even without layoffs, as it takes steps to reduce pension costs by pre-funding to reduce future liabilities.

Diversified manufacturer 3M Co said it would cut about 300 workers as it merges its security and traffic safety businesses. That is a relative drop in the bucket for a company that employs some 84,000 people worldwide, but is a key part of CEO Inge Thulin's plan to fix or sell underperforming parts of the company.

Thulin, who took the reins at the maker of Post-It notes and film used in television screens, has identified a handful of units where he has similar concerns. He is also raising the company's research and development budget to 6 percent of sales this year from 5.5 percent in 2012.

One analyst said companies need to cut costs, but also need to ensure they are cutting the right ones and not expenses such as research and development that will lead to future growth.

"There is a generation of managers out there that experienced the recession, understand what the ramifications are of carrying too much cost into one of these cycles and, as a result, are very focused on margins," said Daniel Holland, equity analyst at Morningstar in Chicago, who covers big industrial companies. "That's a mark of management post the recession."

LOWERED BAR

The continued success of companies has boosted investor confidence and helped send the S&P 500 up almost 5 percent since the start of the year. Investors had been very conservative about their expectations for earnings growth because of such things as wrangling in Washington over the "fiscal cliff" of drastic tax increases and budget cuts.

"The bar was so low and that was because of things that happened in the fourth quarter, particularly Hurricane Sandy and its impact, and the fiscal cliff impact, and I think things are not turning out as bad as analysts anticipated," said Paul Mendelsohn, chief investment strategist at Windham Financial Services in Charlotte, Vermont.

"You're seeing some individual stocks get hammered because expectations were unrealistic and you're seeing other stocks rally because expectations were set much too low."

Amid all the cost-cutting, there is also a sense among some companies that the situation in Europe is not as dire as it had been, an added bonus in year-end results.

Of course, there are still problems: Top U.S. auto parts supplier Johnson Controls Inc warned that lower European auto production would hurt results this quarter, news that overwhelmed a strong fourth-quarter profit.

But for others, it is clear that Europe is, at a minimum, less of a headache.

"We have seen signs of stabilization, particularly in Europe," said Greg Hayes, chief financial officer at United Technologies Corp , which has also benefited from the recent strengthening of the euro against the dollar, which raises the value of its dollar sales in the eurozone.

China, meanwhile, was a big boost for many companies. 3M notched its best quarter in a year in China, reporting 16 percent growth in organic sales. P&G reported "high single digit" percentage growth and Starbucks Corp saw China/Asia-Pacific sales rise 11 percent.

However, be it cutting costs, or restructuring operations, or any other means in the executive tool kit, the laser focus on margins reflects CEOs who remain wary of the economy souring again.

"I see very little downside in being prepared for the downside," Honeywell's Cote added.

The Scary Trend Of Boomer Addiction | Glenbrooke News

In the psychedelic ?60?s, it seemed everyone was ?turning on?.? No one worried about using marijuana or other drugs, as it seemed everyone was doing it.

Now, many of those who came of age in that era are facing a real and rising problem of substance abuse.? How big of a problem is this?

The National Institutes of?Health?became so concerned about the increasing numbers of boomer addicts that it issued a consumer alert this year, its first, on prescription and illicit drug abuse signs and dangers on its website?NIHSeniorHealth.gov.

Boomers are visiting emergency rooms in record numbers for reactions to cocaine, heroin and marijuana.? Some experts blame the pressures of this stage of life.? Juan?Harris?is the clinical director f a boomer treatment unit at the Hanley Center, an addiction recovery center in Palm Beach, Fla.? As reported by ABC News, Harris cites ?divorce, loss of a job, loss of health, a lot of grief and loss issues? as factors that lead to boomer addiction.? According to the news report, Harris finds that older drug users are motivated to break their habit and have a good success rate with treatment.

Besides the illicit drugs, we have another problem with dependency and overuse of legal prescription medications. The average man over 50 takes four prescription drugs.? Boomers are frequently using anti-anxiety drugs, anti-depressants,and? prescription pain medications all of which can lead to dependency and addiction.

It?s even more problematic for boomers to be addicted to these medications than it is for a younger person. Boomers don?t have the metabolism we did in our 20?s.? We can?t get the drug processed out of our systems as fast as we did at a younger age.? The same dose a younger person takes can have a much more long-term and potentially dangerous effect on a person in her 50?s.

Even scarier, the necessary prescription medications boomers take to control cholesterol and high blood pressure can be disrupted by the use of marijuana or other illegal substances.? Age related chronic conditions like heart disease and diabetes are worsened by long term substance abuse.? There is a higher likelihood of a fatal outcome for an addicted senior.

What can we do about this?

If the experts tell us that treatment is often successful with older drug users, it makes sense to get treatment.? It also makes sense to help a loved one with a substance abuse problem find and get treatment if that loved one is willing. Yes, that?s a big ?if?. There are boomer-specific addiction treatment centers.? Perhaps the first step is to do some research and find out what treatment is available for someone you care about.

A good support system, a qualified treatment center, and the willingness to work on overcoming chemical dependency can lead to success.? If drug dependency is happening to someone you love, speak up.? You might be a vital encouragement and help to that person in getting free from the abuse.

Don?t ignore the snore: Snoring may be early sign of future health risks

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Here's a wake-up call for snorers: Snoring may put you at a greater risk than those who are overweight, smoke or have high cholesterol to have thickening or abnormalities in the carotid artery, according to researchers at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

The increased thickening in the lining of the two large blood vessels that supply the brain with oxygenated blood is a precursor to atherosclerosis, a hardening of the arteries responsible for many vascular diseases.

"Snoring is more than a bedtime annoyance and it shouldn't be ignored. Patients need to seek treatment in the same way they would if they had sleep apnea, high blood pressure or other risk factors for cardiovascular disease," says lead study author Robert Deeb, M.D., with the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Henry Ford.

"Our study adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting that isolated snoring may not be as benign as first suspected. So instead of kicking your snoring bed partner out of the room or spending sleepless nights elbowing him or her, seek out medical treatment for the snorer."

The study reveals changes in the carotid artery with snorers -- even for those without sleep apnea -- likely due to the trauma and subsequent inflammation caused by the vibrations of snoring.

Study results will be presented January 25 at the 2013 Combined Sections Meeting of the Triological Society in Scottsdale, Ariz. It has been submitted to The Laryngoscope journal for publication.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) -- a sleep disorder that occurs due to the collapse of the airway in the throat during sleep and causes loud snoring and periodic pauses in breathing -- has long been linked to cardiovascular disease, along with a host of other serious health issues.

But the risk for cardiovascular disease may actually begin with snoring, long before it becomes OSA. Until now, there was little evidence in humans to show a similar connection between snoring and cardiovascular risk.

For the Henry Ford study, Dr. Deeb and senior study author Kathleen Yaremchuk, M.D., reviewed data for 913 patients who had been evaluated by the institution's sleep center.

Patients, ages 18-50, who had participated in a diagnostic sleep study between December 2006 and January 2012 were included in the study. None of the participants had sleep apnea.

In all, 54 patients completed the snore outcomes survey regarding their snoring habits, as well as underwent a carotid artery duplex ultrasound to measure the intima-media thickness of the carotid arteries.

Carotid intima-media thickness, a measurement of the thickness of the innermost two layers of the arterial wall, may be used to detect the presence and to track the progression of atherosclerotic disease. Intima-media thickness is the first sign of carotid artery disease.

Compared to non-snorers, snorers were found to have a significantly greater intima-media thickness of the carotid arteries, the study finds.

The study also revealed no statistically significant differences in intima-media thickness for patients with or without some of the traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease -- smoking, diabetes, hypertension or hypercholesterolemia.

"Snoring is generally regarded as a cosmetic issue by health insurance, requiring significant out-of-pocket expenses by patients. We're hoping to change that thinking so patients can get the early treatment they need, before more serious health issues arise."

The Henry Ford research team plans to conduct another long-term study on this topic, particularly to determine if there's an increased incidence of cardiovascular events in patients who snore.

Along with Drs. Deeb and Yaremchuk, Henry Ford study co-authors are Paul Judge, M.D.; Ed Peterson, Ph.D.; and Judith C. Lin, M.D.

Meridian Closes New Real Estate Fund with $160M in DC Real ...

January 14, 2013

By Lynn Armitage, Contributing Editor

The Meridian Group has proven that even in an uncertain economy, a lot of money can still be made in commercial real estate.

The Bethesda-based real estate investment and development firm has just closed the deal on its first real estate private equity fund, acquiring more than $160 million of discretionary capital from investors that could be leveraged to buy more than $500 million worth of property in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.

?We are very proud to have completed one of the few first discretionary real estate funds raised in the U.S. since the financial crisis in 2008,? said Gary Block, Meridian?s managing director, who appreciates investor confidence in the 20-year-old investment firm.

Meridian has wasted no time in spending capital from its new fund, buying up more than half a million square feet of office space in Northern Virginia, including? the 280,000-square-foot Tysons Technology Center in Tysons Corner.

?We are delighted to have this discretionary fund that enables us to capitalize on the attractive investment opportunities that we are seeing in our market as a result of the slow economy, soft market conditions and low interest rates,? said David Cheek, president of Meridian. ?We believe that it is a good time in the cycle to selectively invest in Washington real estate, and we expect to achieve our targeted returns as the market improves over the next several years and beyond.?

Since first opening its doors in 1993, Meridian has acquired 7.4 million square feet of office, industrial retail and hotel properties, such as an LA Fitness Health Club and National Gateway I and II, as well as 439 acres of land, for a total portfolio value of $2.5 billion.

?We have achieved excellent investment returns by doing all of this over a 20-year period and through five economic cycles now,? said Bruce Lane, executive vice president and managing director of Meridian. ?And we look forward to continuing this success with our new fund.?

This past September, the company sold its flagship asset, 3 Bethesda Metro Center, a 365,000-square-foot office building above the Bethesda Metro, to Brookfield Properties for $150 million.

The Meridian Group was founded by David Cheek and Bruce Lane in 1993, with its primary focus on real estate investment and development in the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area. The benchmark of the company is to invest on behalf of institutional capital partners, such as premier insurance companies and real estate private equity funds. The company formed Meridian Realty Partners I, a discretionary investment fund focused on value-added investment opportunities across all asset types and capital structures.

PC Gaming 'Is The Future' Claims GPG's Chris Taylor - NowGamer

Though the games industry tends to follow a series of trends, there's always been one constant: PC gaming.

Most scoff at it, but Chris Taylor believes it's the future, and 2013 will be the year that PC gaming is finally acknowledged for the bastion of gamers it has always been.

When asked about what will be important in 2013, Taylor said?"In 2013 someone is going to stand up on a chair and declare ? maybe a rooftop ? and say PC gaming is not dead, anyone who says PC gaming is dead should be shot. It?s a lie.

"It?s bigger than ever, it?s the future of gaming, it?s not like it will compete with the other platforms. It is going to be the prominent form of gaming, maybe not in 2013 but these people are going to say this in 2013."

It's all thanks to the likes of Valve and its Big Picture mode, Taylor tells us, as well as living-room centric hardware such as the recently announced Xi3 Piston.

"It?s not console gaming, it?s PC gaming it just happens to be structured so it plays on your TV.

"Look at Microsoft and Surface, that?s a tablet that runs PC. I don?t know if that?s the solution or if it?ll be something else, but it?s PCs and the openness of PCs ultimately will find its way forward."

Taylor explains it's time the "walled gardens, proprietary technology, systems and licensing and all of that red tape and junk" went away and died, and that 2013 will be the year gamers realise that this can only happen with PC gaming.

It's interesting that Chris Taylor says this, however, since with our look into the year of 2013 feature - where we predict what the year has in store for gamers - we suggested 2013 will be the year of the PC gamer.
