Texas Impressionism Arrives at the Tyler Museum of Art

The Tyler Museum of Art is pleased to announce the arrival of Texas Impressionism: Branding with Brushstroke and Color, 1885-1935. This exciting exhibition opens at the TMA on February 10, 2013.

Drawn from public and private collections, including works from the TMA?s Permanent Collection, the exhibition features over 100 Texas Impressionist works by more than 60 different artists, including Robert Julian Onderdonk, Frank Reaugh, E.G. Eisenlohr and Porfirio Salinas.

Texas Impressionism presents a rare opportunity to see how Texas artists around the turn of the 20th century created their own style influenced by European painters. It features landscapes and urban scenes capturing the magnificence of Texas executed in the Impressionist style from 1885 through 1935.

The works in the exhibition, painted by both native Texans and those who moved to the area, illustrate the Lone Star State at the turn of the century. From the beaches of the Gulf Coast to the rolling plains of the Panhandle, the paintings offer unique perspectives of the Texas landscape and further explain our predecessors? relationship with the land.

To complement the exhibition, other stellar works have been gathered from collections in Tyler by the TMA. These paintings will be displayed in a special ?Tyler Collects? section within the gallery.

In conjunction with the exhibition opening, the 2013 Spring Lecture Series at the TMA will begin on Sunday, February 10. Michael Grauer, Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs, will present a public lecture titled ?Texas Impressionism: Branding with Brushstroke and Color, 1885-1935? at 2:00 p.m. at the Jean Browne Theatre located on the TJC campus. The lecture is sponsored by an anonymous donor and is free for TMA Members and $5 for all non-members. Contact the Museum to reserve seats.

The TMA has always had a focus on preserving and promoting Texas art. In the past, the Museum has presented many Texas exhibitions including L.O. Griffith: Painting the Texas Landscape, Texas in My Soul: A.C. Cook and the Hock Shop Collection and many others.

Admission for the exhibition is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, and free for TMA Members and children ages 12 and under. An accompanying catalog commemorating this exhibition will also be available for purchase at the Museum Gift Shop.

Texas Impressionism: Branding with Brushstroke and Color, 1885-1935 has been organized by the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, Canyon, Texas. It will be on view at the TMA from February 10 through May 26, 2013.
