LUDHIANA: A Professor of Soil Conservation of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Dr S.S. Kukal, has been selected for ?12th International Congress Commemoration Award 2012? by Indian Society of Soil Science (ISSS). AnotherPAU scientist, Dr Jayesh Singh, Agronomist, Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, has been conferred with ?Shiksha Rattan Purskar? by the India International Friendship Society (IIFS).
Dr Kukal, has been selected for ?12th International Congress Commemoration Award 2012,? in recognition of his outstanding research work in the field of soil and water management. The scientist will be awarded during 77th Annual Convention of ISSS, slated for December 3 atPAU,Ludhiana. Dr Kukal has done excellent work in water management in rice crop and gully erosion management in Shiwaliks of Punjab. Besides being a visiting scientist to Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) andGriffithAustralia; he has handled many international research projects with funding from Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR),Australia; and International Fund for Agricultural Development- International Rice Research Institute (IFAD-IRRI),Philippines. Having 225 research publications in reputed national and international journals to his credit, he has been instrumental in preparing UG and PG students atCollegeofAgriculturefor pursuing higher studies in US and other countries. Dr U.S. Sadana, Head of Soil Science Department, congratulated the scientist for this achievement.
Meanwhile, Dr J. Singh was awarded ?Shiksha Rattan Purskar? for his meritorious services in education, research and academics. A galaxy of eminent personalities including Dr Bhishma Narain Singh, former Governor of Tamil Nadu and Assam, Sh. G.V.G. Krishna Murthy, former Chief Election Commissioner, and S. Joginder Singh, former CBI Director, presented the award to the scientist during the seminar on ?Role of Education in Modern India,? held at New Delhi recently. Dr J. Singh has worked in the capacity of District Extension Specialist (Agronomy) atPatialaand Jalandhar, where he handled various projects. Besides, he has conducted 53 adaptive trials at 210 locations and 236 frontline demonstrations for adoption ofPAUrecommended technologies and varieties of different crops. He has four recommendations in the PAU Package of Practices, 20 Radio Talks and a number of popular articles, research papers, extended summaries/abstracts in international and national journals, to his credit. A regular teacher of agronomy courses, Dr J. Singh?s extension bulletin on ?Paired Row Trench Planting Technique? in sugarcane in collaboration with Punjab State Farmers? Commission, was appreciated.
